A top doctor in North Kashmir was beaten by some unruly attendant during the intervening night of 5th and 6th September.
A statement issued by Doctors Association Kashmir led by Dr G M Mir said that Dr Zia, who is Medical Officer Kupwara, was on night duty attending patients as routine when a person claiming to be attendant of a patient assaulted him.
“Soon, he was manhandled, abused and a BP Apparatus was hurled on his head injuring him badly. The Doctor was then later rushed to District Hospital Handwara for CT Scan,” Dr Mir said. “An FIR was registered against the attendant and timely intervention by the authorities helped in his arrest.”
Dr Mir led DAK demanded exemplary punishment of the culprit so that these incidents are not repeated and ensure safety and security of doctors for efficient patient care.
“Medical Staff have been working under tremendous stress since the prevailing situation and incidences like these will halt our performance thus affecting the patient care badly,” the statement added.
“These episodes of thrashing of doctors have become a routine and it is difficult for doctors to work in such hostile conditions. Government has failed to ensure safety and security of doctors in hospitals who are under constant fear,” Dr Mir said.
DAK Spokesperson, Dr Mir Mushtaq said, “government is insensitive to repeated assaults on doctors otherwise it would have not been indifferent to our long pending demand of an ordinance on violence against doctors which has prevented such episodes in other states.” “DAK stressed the Government to bring an Ordinance wherein manhandling of any staff or damaging Hospital Infrastructure be made a Cognizable Offence.”
