The police said that four members of the patient’s family were arrested on Thursday after they allegedly assaulted a junior doctor, Abhishek Singh on Wednesday night.
Junior doctors at the state-run SSKM Hospital in Kolkata sat on an “indefinite strike” and demanded “proper security arrangements” for them following the alleged assault on one of the doctors by the relatives of a child patient who had been admitted there.
The police said that four members of the patient’s family were arrested on Thursday after they allegedly assaulted a junior doctor, Abhishek Singh on Wednesday night for alleged negligence on Singh’s part in the child’s treatment. The incident took place Wednesday night when relatives of the child — from Basirhat’s Golaghata in North-24 Parganas district and admitted at SSKM’s Emergency ward — allegedly beat up the junior doctor complaining delay in treatment, police said.
After the incident, other junior doctors in the hospital managed to catch hold of four members of the patient’s family and took them to the Bhowanipore police station and registered a complaint, following which an FIR was lodged. Senior doctors of the SSKM management, DC (South) Murli Dhar along with Officer-in-Charge and other officers of Bhowanipore police station reached the hospital at 2.30 am after the junior doctors started their strike.
The junior doctors gheraoed the visiting team of senior hospital physicians, which went on till Thursday morning after the arrests were made, Dhar said.
They later submitted a deputation to the Institute of Post-Graduate Medical Education and Research and the SSKM Director demanding proper security for the doctors at the hospital and vowed to continue their strike till their demands are met, junior doctor Sujan Ghosh said.
A large team of police personnel has been posted at the hospital. The condition of the patient is stated to be stable.
