In a directive to the Medical Council of India last year, the Union Health Ministry had asked for extending the three-month rural posting to one year and includes it in the MBBS curriculum. The Union Government has implemented 1 year extra internship and rural posting for 1 year mandatory for all PG aspirants for the session 2015-16. This means that the total duration before one can give the PG exams has become 7.5 years.
However, the Medical students are opposing the decision of the Centre to extend the course beyond 5.5 years to 7.5 years. In such a situation, the Medical students launched a campaign with the name “Save the Doctor”.
In this regard, the Medical students of Jammu and Kashmir staged a protest in the State yesterday, which is however continued even the second day. Now the Medical students of Delhi came forward to stage a protest at Nirman Bhawan, New Delhi.
The agitating MBBS students demanded that the Union Health Ministry equalise Under Graduation (UG) and Post Graduation (PG) medical seats and include rural posting as part of internship and postgraduate training. The agitating medical students, however, claim that rural posting “is unfair on them and is a waste in the absence of proper infrastructure at the primary health centres.
They are going to launch the campaign all over the country from tomorrow. Over two to three lakh medical students are supporting this movement across the country. However, they are taking this campaign forward using the Social Media Netwoks, mainly FaceBook https://www.facebook.com/savethedocs
