Hyderabad: Doctors at Gandhi Hospital are a relieved lot these days. This is because a 20-member team of police and armed reserve force has been deployed at the state-run hospital after a patient’s attendant manhandled a junior doctor and the issue snowballed resulting in a strike by doctors.

Doctors said that the team is working in two shifts at the intensive care areas of the hospital round the clock since the last two days. Heeding to demands by the doctors, installation of CCTV cameras has also commenced at the hospital. The state government sanctioned Rs 5 lakh to the hospital and work is going on in full swing to install 50 CCTV cameras in emergency areas including casualty, acute medical care unit and gynaecology department among others. While there is a requirement of 250 CCTV cameras at the hospital, doctors said that the rest of the cameras will be installed in a phased manner. “The hospital had a police outpost earlier with two policemen on duty. They were never serious about their work. The new team is now making rounds of the casualty wards and other sensitive departments,” said Dr P Shravan Kumar, Gandhi hospital unit president of Telangana Government Doctors Association (TGDA).

Doctors had demanded deployment of Special Protection Force (SPF) at all five teaching hospitals in Telangana. “We had discussions with health minister T Rajaiah and home minister Nayani Narasimha Reddy who assured us that SPF will be deployed in six months,” said Dr Siddipet Ramesh, TGDA unit general secretary. “We will meet chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao demanding that all teaching hospitals in the city be manned by armed personnel,” Reddy added.

Doctors said that armed police should be deployed to put an end to physical attacks on doctors that have become common across the state. According to Dr Shravan, at least three monthly cases of assault on doctors are reported at Gandhi but in a chunk of the cases, attendants mostly hurl abuses.
