Allahabad assaulted doctor in ICU, condition serious



Dr. Rohit Gupta, a renowned Gastroenterologist at Anand Hospital in Allahabad, who was brutally beaten by the relatives of a patient after he died on wee hours on April 12, is currently in ICU, where his condition is said to be serious.

Gupta was beaten by the relatives of a 80-year-old patient, who came to the hospital with multi organ failure and died.

Gupta was beaten for about 10 to 15 minutes and his mobile and gold chain were snatched. The relatives also damaged the ICU infrastructure.

Following the assault on the doctor, IMA’s Allahabad branch has gone on strike. The UP State Branch has also called a state wide agitation.

IMA claimed that no action has yet been taken against the accused despite a police complaint.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) also wrote a letter to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav expressing concern over the assault of a senior member of the Association.

Dr. A. Marthanda Pillai, National President, IMA and Dr. K.K. Aggarwal, Hony. Secretary General, IMA, urged Yadav to intervene in the matter immediately, so that doctors can work without any fear.
