Strike against ‘assault’ on medic enters 2nd day at Srinagar’s SMHS Hospital, patients in distress

Saturday, 19 December

All medical work in Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) Hospital in Srinagar remains halted on Saturday, a day after a doctor here was ‘assaulted’ by a patient’s kins.

Resident doctors are continuing their strike on the second day against the alleged manhandling of their colleague by attendants of patients who died in the hospital. The hospital authorities and doctors are meeting a civil administrative official to discuss the security apparatus in the hospital.

Doctors claimed that the patient, whose attendants assaulted a doctor, was suffering from multiple life threatening conditions and this situation was already explained to his attendants. “Even after we had told them the patient was critical, they chose to harass the doctor physically,” another doctor said.

Meanwhile, patients in the hospital are facing huge inconvenience due to the ongoing strike.

“The casualty and emergency wards are operating while all other departments are on strike until the demands are met,” a doctor told iamin.

Protesting doctors are demanding an action against the people, who assaulted the resident doctor in the anesthesia section. The doctors also demand an action against the CMO and Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, who paraded the doctors in front of the attendants.
