AGRA: Three junior doctors were allegedly assaulted by a patient’s attendants at S N Medical College on Tuesday late night. According to the college authorities, about eight people including an alleged worker of the Samajwadi Party (SP) attacked the doctors with chains and rods after an argument broke out between the patient’s attendant and the treating doctor.

Doctors alleged that assaulters were drunk at the time of incident and were having alcohol just outside the radiotherapy department inside a SUV belonging to the alleged SP worker, Virendra Yadav, a resident of Kakrotha area in Agra.

The incident took place around 11.30 pm in radiotherapy department when the junior doctor on duty, Lakshman Pandey, asked the patient Om Prakash’s son, Bunty Yadav, not to interfere in his work.

Irked at this, Pandey said, one of four persons sitting along with Bunty grabbed him from back and started assaulting.

“Hearing commotion my colleagues, Dhirendra Kumar Sachan and Pradeep Kumar K N, came to my rescue, but they were also overpowered and beaten up. Suddenly, we noticed that the number of Bunty’s aides have swelled from four to eight-nine. They were armed with chains, hockey sticks and rods. It was the ward boy who saved us by raising an alarm,” added the junior doctor.

While Lakshman received soft tissue injuries on his hands, his colleague Pradeep’s right hand was fractured in the attack. The third doctor too has received injuries on his hands.

As doctors and the college staff started gathering at the spot, the assaulters tried to flee in the SUV having a SP flag installed on its bonnet. However, they could not succeed in this attempt and ran away leaving the vehicle.

Later, the police arrested Bunty Yadav and two other assaulters after registering an FIR on doctor’s complaint.

SP (city) Sameer Saurabh said, “A manhunt is going on to nab the rest of the culprits. Police parties have sent to various places in this regard. The SUV has been taken in police custody”

SP district spokesperson Anil Rawat said Virendra Yadav was not linked with the party any manner and just having party’s flag on the vehicle did not prove his association.

The incident has come close on the heels of a similar incident reported in Kanpur in March, 2014 where a local SP MLA has assaulted doctors of a GSV medical college. As a result, doctors not only from GSV medical college, but across the state had gone on a strike impairing medical services for six days.
