Attack on doctor, IMA to observe protest on May 20

Mangaluru: Condemning the attack, abduction, dacoity, intimidation and attempt to murder a senior doctor and also assault on a senior lady nurse at Deralakatte Yenepoya Hospital on May 16, the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Mangaluru branch along with various other medical and healthcare associations will hold a massive 24-hour protest in the city by closing down all elective services in all the hospitals and medical colleges in undivided Dakshina Kannada.

IMA Mangaluru President Dr. K R Kamath said, “The protest will be held on Monday, May 22 at Nehru Maidan. A protest march will be taken out from Bavutagudda to Nehru Maidan. By closing down all elective services in all hospitals and medical colleges in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada for 24 hours. But the emergency service including casualty, emergency OT, ICU will be uninterrupted.”

He also expressed that the district had a good name in the entire country for safety but unfortunately few antisocial elements cause are disturbing the peace here.

Dr. Y Bharath Shetty, former vice president of Dental Council of India said that dental college doctors, students from both the districts will join the protest.

It may recalled that a gang of nearly 40 people who were outraged by the death of a 65-year-old patient from Kinya, alleged medical negligence, barged into the hospital on May 16 and attacked a doctor at Yenepoya Medical College and Hospital in Deralakatte. They had dragged him out all the way from the sixth floor of the hospital to the main gate. The group did not even spare a nurse on duty who too had to face its wrath.
