The State unit of the Indian Medical Association has condemned the attack on Tinku Edvina, a house surgeon at the Jubilee Mission Hospital, in Thrissur on Friday. A statement issued by the association said that Dr. Edvina, who was hacked repeatedly by a man, continued to be in a serious condition.

The association said that the though the government had passed an ordinance to arrest those who attack doctors without bail, the State Assembly had not passed it. The statement alleged that there existed an atmosphere in which doctors could not work without fear. Frequent incidents such as the one in Thrissur continued to threaten doctors.

The statement also recalled the incident in which a doctor Udayashankar Bhatt was attacked at his nursing home in Bandudukka in Kasargod district on May 17.

The association appealed to the government and the Health Minister to ensure that exemplary punishment was meted out to those who were responsible for such incidents. The statement was issued by J. Rajagopalan Nair, president of IMA’s State unit, and its secretary A.V. Babu.
