BENGALURU: Medicos, doctors and faculty from Bangalore Medical College staged a protest on Friday against the alleged assault on a doctor last week. The accused has been arrested. The doctors gathered at Victoria Hospital raising the slogan, `Don’t hurt the healing hands’.

Suhas, attendant of a patient, was to visit the hospital for a test on May 26.Instead, he went to the hospital on May 28, claiming his appointment was on that day. The staff said his appointment was registered in their records on May 26 and asked him to wait for some time to take the test. “Suhas started misbehaving with our staff and slammed Dr Ramesh Patil, a postgraduate medico. No patient can physically abuse doctors,” said Manjunath B D, treasurer of Bangalore Medical College Teachers’ Association.

The students and faculty lodged a complaint against Suhas, who is a government employee, at VV Puram police station. Suhas was arrested on Friday on charges of assaulting the doctor without provocation.

Dr Smitha Segu, head of the plastic surgery department and joint secretary at Bangalore Medical College Teachers’ Association, said: “We urge the government to strictly implement the law against violence towards doctors. There should be police on the campus to ensure safety of doctors.”
