A WOMAN has allegedly bit a doctor on the arm and pushed a nurse while being treated at the Hervey Bay Hospital on Friday night.
The alleged bite was hard enough to draw blood and cause bruising.
The 19-year-old had been stopped by police on the Esplanade in Torquay after she was allegedly seen acting aggressively.
Police took her to hospital due to concerns for her health as she appeared to be heavily intoxicated.
Maryborough police Criminal Investigation Branch officer-in-charge Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Mick Polit said it took a number of officers to restrain the woman after the incident.
He said the alleged assault highlighted the dangers faced by medical professionals and emergency services when dealing with those affected by drugs and alcohol.
“Medical professionals, including doctors, hospital staff and ambulance officers are obviously undertaking their chosen profession as they want to help and care for people at their most vulnerable,” he said.
“They are certainly not there to be treated as punching bags by idiots affected by drugs and alcohol.
“Police will not tolerate this kind of behaviour.”
The woman was charged with serious assault, common assault, public nuisance, obstruct police and breaching bail.
The woman will appear in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on Monday afternoon.
