KOLKATA: A young doctor assaulted by relatives of a patient is recuperating in the hospital where he is admitted with injury in the forehead, eye and the nose. The incident has left the doctor mentally shattered. Police has arrested two in connection to the assault.

The incident happened in Kolkata’s Kothari Medical Centre (KMC) on Thursday. Dr Ghulam Hiader was on emergency duty when two women walked in and demanded an injury report for one of them. On examining Haider said that there was no such injury and hence refused to obliged.

The two women came back with a group of men after few minutes. The men started raining blows on Haider. His colleague came to his rescue and he was immediately admitted for treatment.

An FIR was lodged with Alipore Police station late in the night. The CCTV footage captured by cameras installed in the hospital was also provided to police.

Police identified two men who assaulted the doctor and arrested them on Friday. According to police they are from the locality where the hospital is situated.

“There was no provocation at all. The scenario has become quite scary with patient party assaulting doctors as and when they feel like,” said Dr Sanjay Holme Choudhury, a colleague posted in the surgery department of the same hospital.

West Bengal Doctor’s Forum (WBDF) has come out strongly against the assault, adding that assault on doctors have become more frequent after the West Bengal Clinical Establishment (Registration, Regulation and Transparency) Act 2017 came into being. The doctors’ body in fact has already moved the court against the act that they call is unconstitutional.
