Police arrested a patient’s relative tonight in connection with an assault on doctors of NRS hospital in the afternoon, following which some junior doctors went on an impromptu strike.
A hospital official said Ajay Mullick, 16, was admitted to the medicine ward around 10am today.
The Beleghata ID hospital had referred him to NRS after he developed jaundice while being treated for malaria.
Around 2pm, his relatives attacked a junior doctor, Prasenjit Biswas, in the ward following an argument over an alleged delay in treating him, the hospital official said.
As news of the assault spread, interns and house staff gathered in front of the emergency ward and staged a sit-in.
The ensuring commotion left the entrance to the ward blocked for a few hours.
Around 4:30pm, the teenager, a resident of Mullick Bazar, died.
The hospital authorities filed a police complaint against one of his relatives, Bijoy Singh.
His family members filed a counter-complaint alleging junior doctors had assaulted them.
The junior doctors resumed work at night after the authorities promised to increase security on the campus.
Saurabh Chattopadhyay, medical superintendent and vice-principal, NRS Medical College and Hospital, said. “An incident happened today, after which we have had discussions with representatives of interns and house staff. No one had called a strike and patients have been treated as usual.”
Today’s incident comes within 10 days of doctors of private hospitals boycotting OPD services to protest attacks against doctors.
