The Mumbai Police Monday arrested a patients relative under Section 4 of the Doctors Protection Act, 2010, for physically assaulting a resident doctor at state-run JJ hospital. The doctor, Wafi Ansari, attached with opthalmology department, claimed that the patient was scheduled to undergo a cataract surgery on Tuesday.
Ansari said five patients could not be allotted beds immediately due to an overflowing patient admission. The accused, relative of one of the five, reportedly held Ansari by his neck and abused him publicly before hospital staff overpowered him. We have lodged an FIR against. He is liable for three years jail or fine of Rs 50,000 under the Act, said Dr Sagar Mundada, president of Medical Association of Resident Doctors.
The accused also engaged in a fight with department head Dr Ragini Parekh and dean Dr TP Lahane. The incident comes three days after resident doctors across Maharashtra went on strike demanding better security.
