A gynaecologist in Sangvi area of Pune was attacked by a man, after the doctor refused to medically terminate the pregnancy of his live-in partner. According to the doctor, the woman was five months pregnant and since terminating a pregnancy after 12 weeks without the certificate of a medical practitioner is illegal, he refused to do the abortion.
The doctor Amol Bidkar runs a maternity centre at Kate Puram chowk in Pimple Gurav area and has sustained injuries on his right hand. Senior police inspector Ajay Chandkhede, in charge of Sangvi police station told DNA, “Nearly two weeks back, the attacker had come to Dr Bidkar’s clinic along with a pregnant woman. The man claimed that the woman was his live-in partner and they wanted to terminate the pregnancy. When Dr Bidkar examined the woman, he found that the woman was five months pregnant and therefore told them that he cannot terminate the pregnancy.” According to the statement given by Dr Bidkar to police, the man again visited his clinic on Saturday night at around 9.30pm and insisted that he terminate the pregnancy of his partner. “When the doctor remained firm on his stand that he will not terminate the pregnancy illegally, the attacker got agitated, took out a sharp weapon and attacked him before running away,” Chandkhede added. Following the attack, a team of Sangvi police visited the clinic but they found that there are no CCTV cameras installed. “The doctor did not note down the person’s name when he had visited the clinic earlier. We are now checking the footage of other CCTV cameras installed on the road to get a clue of the attacker,” Chandkhede said. Meanwhile, members of Sangvi- Pimple Gurav doctors association visited the Sangvi police station and demanded strong action against the attacker.
